Letters from the Trenches: Key Stage 3

This module offers KS3 students a personal, poignant insight into life in the trenches of World War One.  Two letters from a Brighton soldier candidly describe the mud, rain, rations, and shells; a couple of months later, his widow received two letters of condolence describing his death.

In a follow-up session, students carry out an interactive audio interview with the soldier's grandson, and look at photos and online documents in order to piece together the story of Private Percy Herbert Whitehouse.
