Hi, when was this photograph taken? Was it before the work the Burges did later? Thanks
In the early to mid 1980s I was working for a roofing company called John Williams & Co based in Lancing. I spent two weeks working on this church re-slating mostly the upper levels of the roof with various other gangs. The whole job took quite some time to do. I lived in Brighton around the Queens Park area and worked as a roof tiler around the Sussex area.
1. Reply to Rosie: yes.
2. Question: Why is this building known as “the cathedral of the back streets”? When and how did it get its (incongruous) name? Anywhere less like back streets I’ve yet to see!
