107 Assembly 1950

107 Assembly

I joined 107 Assembly after leaving Germany and the RAF. Syd Elliott was the Foreman and I worked for Wally Jenner the Leading Hand. I can picture most of the people I worked with but regret that I can only recall a few names. I remember Syd Pelling, Ron Scott, Charlie Diver, Nifty Neale and Jimpy Firth. Perhaps the readers of this page will be able to remind me of the names of the people in the associated photo.

Can you help?

  • The young man on the far right is my uncle John Fry, my Dad Arch and his other brothers Bert and Jim also worked at the Moulsecoomb factory I think Dad may have worked in 107 assembly but not sure.

Sadly Dad and all my Uncles are no longer with us John died in 2000 and Dad in 1998.

I left school aged 15 in 1959 and worked for a short time in the Filing room Lewes Road with the fearsome Miss Newry.

  • I remember Archie Fry in 240 assembly. He was a very amiable and good humoured person. I believe he had a relative who worked in the machine shop. He lived in Twyford Road at Coldean and subsequently moved to Peacehaven.

  • My father Thomas Fry, the eldest of the Fry brothers, also worked there at one time. He went on to be Chief Electrical Engineer for the British Sugar Corporation purchasing from and visiting Allen West on various occasions. Pat Carpenter being my cousin.

  • I believe the group member second from left of photo looks very much like George Hollands. He was noteworthy for his stentorian renditions of classical opera music, but not always with clean lyrics. A great
    Character none the less..
