School photo c1962

Long photo split in to 3 – I had trouble scanning it and could not get it to stitch. I’m 4th on the right on the bottom row. I remember many of the faces and some of them have contributed to this this site – what memories!!

  • I think that is an old friend of mine, Richard Lawn, third in from right back row top picture.

  • John, I’m sure you’re correct, that is Richard Lawn, I knew him at Goldstone Junior.

I went to Brighton Grammar after Goldstone Junior, but another very good friend of mine from Goldstone, Jonathan Shaw, also went to the Secondary Tech, and I’m on this site because I was hoping to spot him in this 1962 photo – he and Richard would have been just starting in the fourth year in September 1962.  Unfortunately I can’t conclusively identify him – I haven’t seen him since we were twelve!  That might be him sixth from the left end of the middle photo, back row, or possibly it could be him first from the left end in the back row, same photo.  Can you help?

  • Thanks for uploading this photo, I have found myself and other classmates in the second row. Good to see all the old teachers again, brings back some memories.

  • It amazes me how long those teachers were there. I know that Downing was head in 1947 until 69. Chappel, Leal, Stockbridge, Kinley, Parfitt, Taylor and McNeff I can recognise and they were all there when I left in ’71.It must have been a job for life back then. Anyone name all the teachers left to right for clarity?

  • I am in the photo, second row along with Mick Fabricant now an MP, John Denby, Mick Young, Dave Edwards and some more I cannot remember their names but recall faces. Teachers I recall are furthest left Ralph Homer (History), then is Wally Walsh (English and world champion board rubber chucker) 2nd left of Mr Downing, I can also spot Mr Williams (Geography) left of Parfitt, right of Mr Parfitt is a maths teacher I cannot recall his name. Also there is Mr Bullock (science and physics) I left in 1966. I also remember Ian Luckhurst, Pete Sayer, Alan Carr, Jay Adams.

  • I can’t locate him on the picture, but I’m sure he’ll be there – my pal Alan Pierce would have started at the school in September 1960, the same time as I started Hove County Grammar. We both lived in Hurstpierpoint and travelled down by train from Hassocks every day (after a bus or cycle ride to the station, which made for a long day!). Sadly, Alan died some years ago, but I still remember his cheerful face.

  • I think my first boyfriend Peter (Pete) West will be somewhere in this photograph although I can’t immediately pick him out. I think this is because the photograph was taken in 1962 which was 2 years before we met and it’s possible he could have changed quite a bit in the intervening 2 years. We met in 1964 as we travelled on the same buses to and from our respective schools, Pete was at this school and I was at Dorothy Stringer. We both lived in Mile Oak so this was a long bus journey which gave us the opportunity to form a good friendship before we started to go out with each other. Although we were together for only about 2 years I’ve often thought about Pete and our time together with a great deal of affection. I think there’s something very special and memorable about our ‘first love’. So Pete, wherever you now may be, I’d like to wish you a very happy and healthy New Year.
