Utilising local street artists
The once dark and gloomy ‘twitten’ linking through to the Tesco car park and St Andrew’s Church is now a colourful collage with an array of local scenes and nostalgic themes, while bringing a modern edge to the area through the talents of local street artists. The mural has come about through a joint effort by local organisations including the George Street Traders Association, Hove Business Association, Brighton & Hove City Council, and local art company BrightonThinkBig.

Funding partners for the scheme
Funding for the scheme was boosted by a contribution from the European-funded Communities and Families Tackling Addiction (CAFTA) project. Suggestions for the designs were received from residents and traders. Support and equipment was donated by local partners at Dulux Trade Paints and Brewers.
New look for George Street
The deputy chair of the council’s economic development and culture committee, Councillor Christopher Hawtree, said: “The new mural is a welcome addition to the colourful banners, seasonal celebrations and community fun days that are all part of life on George Street these days.“Passers-by have been stopping to look and are acknowledging this previously overlooked space once again, with many stopping to share a memory of George Street as they remember it.”

As a matter of interest, what kind of paint was used?
Hello Stefan – to be honest I do not know – but – as Brewers and Dulux Trade Paint donated materials – it must have been just ordinary decorating paint. Jennifer
It is a shame because the effort and skill that went into this project is beyond criticism, unfortunately the feedback I am receiving is that it should not have interfered with the existing natural brickwork. In other words, a waste of time and money.
