Getting together for tea and chats

In 2013 I met an elderly lady who told me her best friend was her TV. She was lonely and had not walked to the shops for two years, although her mobility was very good. I think this was the defining moment in which I felt I had to do something, and create somewhere for seniors to get together for a cup of tea and have a good chat. I began with holding a Tea Club at St Nicholas Church Hall Saltdean every Friday.

A jolly good time

It took a few months for word to get around but now it is very popular. We have regular Tea Dances with live music, entertainment, trips, games, cards and quizzes and lots of tea and cake. We use vintage china tea cups and saucers, pretty table cloths and we all have a jolly good time. We have even had a belly dancer entertain us recently, and have regular visits from Simon Kirby MP, Mayor Wayne Botting, Mayor Brian Fitch and Mayor Robert Robertson.

Reaching isolated seniors

An enthusiastic Heather Sayers joined our small team of volunteers and along with Jay and Tina, we opened a further three clubs. We are proud to say we are a unique ‘not for profit’ social club and all donations help towards the running costs and the hope of opening more of our clubs in the near future. Our aim is to reach isolated seniors who maybe lonely, and to build a stronger happier community for our older generation.

Our weekly Tea Clubs are:
Saltdean on Fridays at St Nicholas Church 2-4pm
Telscombe on Tuesdays at Telscombe Civic Centre 10.30-1.30pm
Newhaven on Fridays at Meeching Hall 11-1pm
Moulsecoomb on Mondays at The Bevy, Hillside 12-2pm

We do not charge a membership fee, so we rely on donations and sponsors. If anyone is interested in volunteering for us or becoming a sponsor, please do get in touch. Together our communities can beat loneliness in older age.
