Kemp Street 1974?

Trawling the collection

As you can see I have been trawling the museum photograph collection again.

I am led to believe this is Kemp Street – but I have no way of knowing if that is correct. The information in the museum albums have been known to be wrong in the past.

But of course I know that my well-informed MyBHers will put me right.

So – is it Kemp Street – and is it 1974? I am relying on you!

  • Looks earlier than 1974.

  • That tallies with my 1974 Kelly’s Directory, Jennifer. At No 30 (as the photo indicates on the frontage) Kemp Street was Stanley G Duplock, refreshment rooms.

  • Kelly’s 1974 shows ‘Stanley G.Duplock, refreshment rooms at 30 Kemp St. It looks like ’30’ is on the fascia board. It is the only café listed. In the image there is another shop window a few doors down, this would be ‘Magpie House, S.J.Mainstone, antique dealers’

  • It is Kemp Street, where Stanley Duplock has Refreshment Rooms at no 30. 1974 would be consistent with the closure of Ponsford’s Hairdresser’s shop next door (shown to the left).

  • I can confirm this was Stan’s café. I was a kid in the 60s when my Mum, Kay Leon, had a ladies’ hairdressing salon on the corner of Trafalgar and Kemp Streets, called Mercedes Hair Salon. Stan’s café fed us, along with hundreds of other workers, mainly postmen from the sorting office.
Stan was a brilliant cook, breakfasts lunches and afternoon meals. He and the two ladies who worked with him served delicious roasts from huge roasting tins, homemade puddings were gorgeous jam roly polys, apple pies and custard. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to recreate the fried potatoes he served in the afternoons.
I can see him now in my mind’s eye, a slim middle aged man with thinning hair, heavy rimmed glasses and a white apron. The ladies (was one of them called Flo?) serving the men up and down the three small floors of the building.
If only I could cook like Stan, all this was about 60 years ago but I still remember the café and his delicious food very well. Thank you Stan.
    Stuart Leon.
