I am aware that Dockerill’s have traded in Brighton for a very long time.
As long as I have been in Brighton they have been in their present position.
The photograph here confuses me – where is it?

The corner of Gardner Street, Jennifer.
I think it’s on the corner of Gardner Street and Church Street.
This image is taken from the corner of Bond Street looking west uphill; the Dockerills shop in this image is now the ice cream parlour. The corner shop in Bond St is the butchers and the big brick building on the corner of Tichbourne St was the Providence Chapel demolished in the mid 1960s and now a big office complex. A nice reminder of a non-trendy North Laine with practical shops. When they made the police thriller film with Jack Warner- ‘Jigsaw’- in the 1960s, this corner featured in one of the scenes and only the trading names were boarded over and re-named.
If you Google Dockerills you will find their website which has an interesting history of the firm from 1915 including a branch in Edward Street.
Thanks guys – Dockerills in Edward Street – definitely did not know that.
Hi Jennifer. If you search on this site for Dockerills you will find a number of references and one of them has a photo of the Edward Street shop. This probably needs to be brought together with links or something.
Expanding upon Geoff Mead’s comment, whilst it has been a long time since I have seen ‘Jigzaw’ I seem to recall that one of the scenes took place inside Dockerills shop and the William IV pub could clearly be seen through the open door.
Strangely, in the history of the business, which Dennis refers to, a similar shot to Jennifer’s dated 1948 wrongly describes the same shop as being on the corner of New Road!
In 1949 Dockerills is listed at 31a & 31b Edward St; this is on the north side so all cleared post-war, but roughly just below the old AMEX building.
Church Street has definitely been widened since this photo was taken and the round cornered building that was Dockerills isn’t there any more. Have a look on Google street view – the Dockerills building was next door (south of) what is now the ice cream parlour.
