Are you sure that this is Mr Dibben in the photo? This man looks a lot more dapper than I remember him. Mr Dibben used to frighten me and I often think that my lack of ability in maths was because he made me feel so ‘wrong’ about it. I seem to remember than he favoured the girls over the boys. Some, here, say they think that Mr D suffered from what we would now call post traumatic stress disorder, after the Second World War. I do wonder, though, if he should ever have been a teacher. I don’t think he enjoyed the job.
Yep. Its Mr Dibbens. He taught us in the annexe, this was the fourth year before we all left. I had mixed feelings about him. He was rumoured to have “shell shock” as you say PTSD.

In the fourth year while in this class, I played for the school football team. We won the school league in that year or possibly the cup. We beat Rudyard Kipling School (I think) for the first time. The team was called up on stage at the morning assembly and lined up. Mr Morgan the headmaster, then went along the line and shook our hands to congratulate our achievement. This day was also the first time I wore spectacles much to the amusement of my friends, and to my embarrassment.
This is definitely not Mr Dibben in the photo. He was older and taller, and I think Philip’s comment about the war is accurate. There was a rumour that he had been a prisoner of war, and he was very scary and not very “together”. I felt sorry for him, and I don’t think he should have been a teacher, either. I left in 1962, and the teacher in the photo was not at the Downs while I was there.
If it is Mr Dibben, I will be very surprised. He was my teacher in Form 3A, in 1959/60, and like Philip I think the man in the photo looks a lot more dapper, and younger than the man who taught me. Mind you, I don’t remember Mr Dibben ever smiling, so perhaps that is what is confusing us. I would say that the girls in the back row are standing on a bench, Tina, which makes the teacher look shorter. The girls in my 4th year were never that tall! Who else could the teacher be? Any suggestions?
