Following the 1927/8 demolitions of houses in Grand Parade and Pavilion Parade this rather ugly rounded building was erected in 1930/1.
It was put to a variety of uses, offices, furniture store etc but never looked to be of a permanent nature. Photographed on July 2, 1967.
The building was still there in the early 1990s.

In 1954 it was a furniture store and I brought a very nice Cintique chair from them, I still have it to this day and it is in great condition still, it now has loose covers but under them is the original red moquet also in great condition. It as part of the furniture I had in my room at home. I seem to recall it only cost about £15.
Seem to remember it was called Robinson’s furniture store. I think it laid derelict for a while, before being demolished.
I am not sure ‘ugly’ really represents the style of the architecture here! It is a style sometimes referred to as ‘Moderne’, an Anglicised version of ‘International Modern’ style and one seen in several local locations. On the right of the picture is the 1930s ‘Dog Tray’ pub. There was a long string of reminiscence about the pub-and its curious name- several years ago on this site.
I vaguely remember this building being something to do with the art collect in the late 60s/early 70s.
It’s one of those buildings that look as if something is missing-possibly another floor! It’s pretty grim as architecture, and was doomed from its installation I imagine, although possibly welcomed by window-cleaners! I don’t know what has replaced it, but it can’t be worse, can it?
Something stirs at the back of my mind. I think at some time it was a car show room , I may be wrong but memories play funny tricks.
I remember it was used as an annex to the Art College during the early 70s.

Howard Robinson (Brighton) Ltd
I remember this building really well from my art student days, when I embarked on an Art Foundation Course here in 1972. The life drawing classes were held on the first floor to the right of the photo. This often caused a stir on the top deck of double decker buses turning to go up Edward Street, whose passengers had a clear view of the naked models. One model in particular would smile and wave to her public!
