A Morse code specialist
My grandfather, Fred Henderson, worked for the GPO all his life in Darlington, Co. Durham, except for three years during the war when he was seconded to the Admiralty Wireless Telegraphy Training School in Brighton. The reason for this is that he was recognized as being one of the best Morse code specialists in the Post Office. He passed many years ago, but while he was alive he told me endless stories of his time there. But it was only recently that I discovered a website that recounts the brief history of this School, with link:
To my amazement, they had pictures of the staff, and there he was in the centre of two of the pictures! I have attached one of the pictures that I downloaded where I have circled my grandfather. There is also an interesting account by Clifford Dennison, a naval cadet who studied there, about his experiences. Although he does not mention my grandfather by name he says how impressed he was with the Morse code skills of his “ex_GPO” instructors. It was while searching for more information on Clifford Dennison that I came across this website, since his memories are posted here also.
