I came across this photograph some years ago when my my grandfather’s brother, Mr Ronald Woods, passed away.

No one knows why he had this photo and how it relates, if at all, to the Woods family.

Can anyone shed some light on this? A long shot I know, but worth a try.

  • There was a Hudson Brothers Ltd , Provision Merchants, at 67 East Street, Brighton in the 1974 Kelly’s Directory, but I think the slope of the pavement from left down to right in the old photo rules out East Street as its location.

  • This could be their other branch just across the road at the bottom of Bartholomews which I have an old image of the shop hung with Christmas poultry. The slope Alan notes may fit with Bartholomews.

  • Hi Paul,

Hudson Bros had shops at 67, East Street and 60, Church Road Hove. However, I believe the premises in your photo may have been in King’s Parade, Ditchling Road.

  • Andy, Kings Parade [near where I live] is on the ‘up’ side of Ditchling Rd, the west side, this photo has a downward slope. I have checked my Kelly’s 1914 and cannot find Hudson’s either side of the road, however it does show the Bartholomews address at No 5, but as a poulterer only.

  • My 1913 Kelly’s only shows the East St shop and I would estimate the photo to be of that era rather than later. Of course, Hudson Brothers had a chain of shops across the south: London, Folkestone and Southampton to name but 3 other locations. It must be possible that this is one of the other shops? If Paul Woods doesn’t know the family connection to Hudson’s, then it doesn’t have to be via the Brighton shop?

  • Geoff, I cannot disagree with your remarks about the slope, but equally I had dismissed the Church Road and Bartholomew’s shop on two counts: firstly the upper architecture of the shop is different (look at the window casements and ornamentation); secondly it was consistently listed as George Hudson, Poulterer, Game and Venison Dealer throughout its entire existence (c1868-c1932), which the shop in the photo clearly is not. I am now inclined to believe that this was not Brighton, but possibly Terminus Road, Eastbourne or St Leonards Road, Bexhill, where Hudson Brothers also had shops. Regards Andy

  • Andy, of the two roads you mention, St Leonards Road, Bexhill appears to be completely flat, and Terminus Road, Eastbourne is pretty much the same. Neither seem to have the sort of slope seen in the photo at any point. Do you have numbers for those premises? Regards
