Sheltering from the sun

I am not sure of the exact date of these photographs; I believe they were taken probably early in the 1930s.  My wife’s grandfather, Brighton solicitor Frank Cane, is shown in the first photograph, on the beach somewhere in Hove sheltering from the sun.

King’s Esplanade

The second photograph was probably taken at the same time. I believe they are relatives down from London for the day.  Although written on the back it says ‘Brighton beach’,  from the railings and buildings in the background it is not Brighton. My best guess is that it is probably between King’s Esplanade and the bottom of Hove Street, prior to the building of King Alfred.

Maybe a cool day?

The third photo was probably taken on a different day.The ladies, down from London for the day, seem to be dressed for cool weather. What a shock they would get if they could visit Hove beach on a summer day in 2015. The final photo is another of Frank and his wife Dorothy Cane (nee Bellchamber), although he seems to have the same socks on, the rest of his attire and the weather is different, so also probably a different day.

  • Sheltering from the sun in those plus fours and those long socks, he must have been boiling over already.

  • Wonderful! I have a similar photo from the ’40s of my dad on the beach in Worthing in full dress, although my mother had a one piece bathing costume by then. Times change.
