  • I am in the process of mailing this photo to Chris Cotton in Auckland. I spoke on the phone with him last week and he remembers many names which I have forgotten. Hopefully, I will be able to add a few more names to faces when he replies. Should he read this, Tony Betteridge also has an excellent memory and could no doubt take us back to 1947.

  • Thanks to Chris Cotton there are four more of the girls identified. Next to Doreen Baker is Barbara Ellis and Sylvia Herring, with Veronica Leonard at number 18 ( counting from top left) and below her is Marion Godsmark.

  • I have to disagree with Barry and Chris about the girl next to Doreen Baker.  This is not Barbara Ellis.   Barbara Ellis is the 4th from the left in the third row.  Masses of golden curls !   I’ve another photo which includes her.

  • My Mum went to St Nicolas, in the 1940’s her name was Shirley Jones, and she was friends with Vivian Brown. Are any of these girls my mum as I cannot see her.

  • I think the boy ‘unknown ‘ at the back was – surname – Elliott. Did anyone know Chris Root – who took his mother’s name – Saunders -has appeared on a Portslade ‘site’ – lived in Melbourne since 1960s?

  • Another comment -this photo is from 1949 not 1947

I have my old school report: Mr Eastwood was our teacher 1948-49 – Miss Hind 1949-50!

  • I think the girl seated second from the right is my mother-in -law Anita Wilkins probably aged about 7-8 in 1949.Jane Prior.

  • I agree with Denis. The photo was taken in the front playground in the summer of 1949. It is interesting to note that there were thirty nine of us in the class that day. On occasions during our time there the partitions between Mrs Wells classroom and the classroom next door (Mrs Price’s?) were opened and Mrs Wells taught a class of at least seventy five. This was brought about when bad weather or illness impacted on staff numbers.
In response to Jane Prior’s comment I have to say with some certainty that Anita Wilkins, who was always happy and smiling with rosy cheeks, is the girl seated second from the left in the photograph.
