I attended this school, Infants and Juniors, from 1946 – 1953, and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I see it still enjoys a good reputation. The Headmaster then was Mr Worthing, a Welshman with a passion for music.

Other teachers that I remember are Mr Duffield, Mr Spain, Miss Pilcher, Miss Snook and Mr Goddard. Sport was always encouraged, with keen competition between four houses.
Regular inter-school matches were held with Hangleton, Southwick, Cottesmore, Benfield, St. Nicholas, Goldstone, and Ellen Street schools, with a cup awarded at the end of the season (the Barlow Cup). I hope this will bring back memories and others will add their reminiscences.

I went to Portland Road from 1949 till 1955, then went on to Hove County Grammar School. I was never a football player, but I remember Mr Spain taking us to Wish Park to kick a ball about. I was taught by Miss Pilcher and Miss Randall. Mr Worthing was well liked and approachable.

1943-1946 Mr Mayes was headmaster ( got the stick from him!) & Mr Worthing took Class 1. Was in Class 3 (Mr ? ) & Class 5 ( Miss Klien). Then Mr Mayes left & Mr Duffield took Class 1, Mr Worthing becoming Head Master. We had a Class of 52-54 students, no trouble. Students were allotted to 1 of 4 “House’s” & accumulated points to see which House won, weekly & yearly. Sussex towns. Arundel (Green), Chichester, ???
Add to last mailing. Mr Blake ( Blakie) was the Janitor/ Custodian & lived in the house in the South East corner of the School lot. A big robust fellow & very likable. Our tennis balls used to go into his garden a lot & he would kick them high into the sky, back to us, if he was there. Other team “Houses” were Hastings (Blue), Lewes & Chichester.
I attended this school from 1947 until 1952. I remember Mr. Worthing being the headmaster. One day I was caught ‘improving’ on a photograph in a text book with an ink pen and sent to see Mr. Worthing. As I approached his office, I saw him striding out of the building, so I waited a suitable time in the hall, and then returned red-faced to my class. I have kept the memory of that incident with me for nearly 70 years, but now I have confessed. 🙂
When I was there in the early 60s the houses were Arundel (green), Hastings (blue), Lewes (yellow) and Pevensey (red).
I was there from 1954-1959 and enjoyed my time very much.
Hello, it was so nice to see some more history about West Hove Infant and Junior Schools.
I attended with my mate Chris Cole from 1951 until 1955 and then we moved on up to the Knoll School for Boys.
We fondly remember Mr Worthing but also want to add to the list of teachers, such as Mr Beard, Mr May and Ms Metcalfe.
Music was encouraged by Mr Saunders and we contributed one shilling (5p) a week to save towards £1 (twenty shillings) to purchase a Dolmetsch Descant Recorder.
Unfortunately we can’t remember that there were four Houses.
However, we do remember the “chanting” of the “times table” which I still use as an aid to insomnia.

I started this school as an infant about 1949,it was the happiest time of my school years, I came from a very unhappy home life and
I couldn’t wait for school to start,I remember all the teachers but my favourite was Mrs Snook! wonderful days.
I attended the Infants and Junior schools in the late 1960s. The house names and colours were as stated above by Jon (did we meet?). The headteachers were Miss Holderness and Mr Robinson. The two Miss Martins particularly stick in my mind. While I was there the sad decision to form single sex playgrounds was taken.
My Dad, Tony Phillips, is the boy in the middle of the back row. I believe that he played keeper for the team.
Hi. I was at this School during the latter half of the sixties.
I remember my first year teacher Miss Holderness . I distantly remember her reading The Lion. The Witch and the Wardrobe to us.
My second year teacher was a Miss leach. I did not like her so much!
I think there were other teachers called Mr May & a Miss lovelace ?
