St Mark's School

Class photo c1959
By Derek Fulker

This photograph is of my classmates at St Mark's School circa 1959 with our teacher Shaw Phillips.

I am the little chap in the front row 6 from the right, between the girl and the boy.

I now live in Boston in the USA. Can you identify yourself or anyone else? If you can I would really love to hear from you. Please leave a comment below.

Hi Derek I remember your name and the face. Just a few names I remember, back row left to right 1st boy Tony Haywood. 2nd row 2nd in with goggles, Lawrence Gumbrill. 4th in, Wingrave. 10th in I think it's Dawn Street or Sweet. Front row 8th in, Silsby Bobs sister. I hope this was helpful. I was in the 1961-2 boxing team when we won the shield. If you have any more photos of the old school days I would love to see them. www.thevoxbeatles.co.uk I am the drummer, you might recognise me.

Hi John, How good of you to make a comment. And as for www.thevoxbeatles.co.uk I think you all look pretty cool and the gear looks even cooler. As for the photo: The big fella standing up at the end is David Budd for sure and the chap with the check shirt in the front row is Ian Jackson and I think the scowling chap in a dark sweater, at the back, is David Lumbsden. Her name was Dawn Street not Sweet, I remember now. I think Joanne Tucknott, Grame Grey and Jeff Jackson are in there somewhere but I can't identify them yet. Anyway, good job....

Hi Derek and John. I am in the front row at the far left with the blonde hair in plaits. I remember David Budd, Lesley Wright (back row 5th from left), Rosemary ? (front row 4th from right). I don't know who Jeff jackson is in photo but do know that I was madly in love with him when at school ha ha. Please say you have some more school photos as I have no photos of myself as a child and was so pleased to find this one. Hope you are both doing well. I am married with a son and daughter and two beautiful grandsons, and now live in not so sunny Southend on Sea, Essex.

I remember Mrs Phillips who taught me ca.1950. Her son was in my class. I remember going to his birthday party at a house in Woodingdean, I believe.

I joined this class in the first year of junior school, Miss Hewitt was the teacher, she had a Lambretta ( how cool was she).I remember Derek, and a lot of other names, Dave Lumsden, David Budd, Glen Surtees, Tony Haywood, Roger Wingrave, Chris Ross-King, Lol Gumbrill, Graham Rea, Pauline Jones, Joanne Tucknott, Leslie Tyson, Mark Pybuss, Alan Hallett, Bob Warren, Ian Hayler...... as the years followed teachers were Miss Mawinney, Mr Green ( get set hoo!) and Mrs Knight, headmaster was Mr Pinchen. In the final year we had a pretty good football team, finished second to Whitehawk by two points ( time to let it go I think....two points!!!).

Tremendous oversight on my part, Pete Tamkin is still a proper mate after all this time. He moved to Bexhill when he was 7 or 8, we met up when we were 16 and have been mates ever since ( slight gap while our respective families were establishing) but 50 yrs, it's a long time.

I wonder if any of you can help me? I only have one pic of my dad who was also called David Budd. I just wondered if any of you knew roughly what year this David Budd would have been born?

By Jodie Maltby (02/04/2012)

Hi Jodie. I was at school the same time as David Budd in the photo. I was born in 1953 and I guess he is about the same age.
