Where was Woodingdean Post office?

Recently most of the mystery photos we have published have been Brighton locations, so these lovely shots of Woodingdean will hopefully come as a pleasant change.

The photographs are from the extensive online Photograph Collection of the Royal Pavilion and Museums website. If you have a couple of days to get lost online - give it a visit - it is very addictive.

So our questions are: where in Woodingdean were these buildings situated, and approximately what date would this be?

I believe this is probably near enough upon the same site that the Post Office still stands upon, 544, Falmer Road, close to the intersection with Warren Road / Warren Way. The OS map of 1930 shows it to be located thereabouts and directories show an adjacent cafe and grocery stores. I would hazard a guess that this was probably the early 1930's. Regards, Andy

It looks like it's in the same position as it used to be; below the crossroads, but I can't be sure.

I believe it was on the Falmer Road, on the east side just below the junction with Warren Road at the Downs Hotel.

I think that the pictures shown are indeed on Falmer Road below the position of the post office at the moment, and where the garage stands was a tea room - I think it was called Joy's cafe
