The school became Goldstone Junior School in 1956 and the site was closed in 1974 and the school moved to new buildings in Laburnum Avenue, Hove.

4th car from the left is a red Riley 1.5 that belonged to the one and only Mr Spain. He used to love back spinning tennis balls so they would come back to him, or throwing them at you if you weren’t paying attention, his classroom was right opposite where his car is. He used to bring Yo-Yo and taxi biscuits in to sell to us.
I remember the YoYos he used to sell. But I have to take issue with your memory – that car was black, not red, and his drive to school took him along Newtown Road, where I used to live. He took pleasure in telling the rest of the class that he’d seen me walking to school on days when I was late.
I saw a (partial?) solar eclipse from under those arches. I remember Mr Spain making a remark about the rag and bone man having indigestion: ‘too much cabbage for breakfast’ or something.
I had to go for extra lessons after school at Mr Spain’s house, he lived just up the road from me – we lived at 12 Nevill Avenue and I think he lived at No 44.
The blue and white Hillman between the Humber and the Riley belonged to Mr. Mitchell, who taught 4B.
The two cars directly in front of the Riley 1.5 are both Hillmans.
Good call, Mick. Quite right. Mr. Mitchell’s car was the blue and white Hillman Husky between the Riley 1.5 and the Hillman Minx.
I thought Mitchell’s car was one of those beetle-shaped Saabs. Me and Christopher Monk let his tyres down. God, whose car was it, then?
Mr Mitchell did have a Saab – a grey one. I am sure he still had it years later when we went to the Nevill. Fond memories of Mr Mitchell teaching us to sing ‘Lets go fly a kite’ with him standing there conducting.
The car directly behind the Riley looks as if it might be a Standard 8 or 10.
Does any one know exactly which number Ellen St this school used to be? And what is there now?
The Kelly’s directory for 1934 shows the school to be between 77-81 Ellen St. Although I drove along it on Monday this week, I cannot recall what is there! I think it is part of the Clarendon flats complex – I will check.
My mum went to Ellen Road School. She said that the railings which are visible in the photo are all that remains of it now.
Wow, this has bought back many memories, I was at Goldstone Junior from 1957 to 1961 when I went to the Nevill. Prior to Goldstone, I was at Connaught Road infants – does anyone remember that? I have also just seen the names on the photo of 1957, Class 1b, Mr Lovett which bough back even more memories!
I was at the Goldstone 1956-1959 with David Swaffer, Alan Blackburn, Dennis Gorringe and others, and in September 1959 went to BHSGS. I remember well the teachers we had, Mr Matthews, Mr Rawson, Mr Spain, Mr Mitchell, and Miss Morgan was there also. Mr Mugridge was the Head when I left, having taken over from a rather strict Head whose name I forget.
Hi David Shelton. I think we were in the same classes (Mr Spain and Mr Mitchell). I remember your name and the other 3 you mention. One of the teachers used to call David ‘Hannen Swaffer’. I still remember some of the outrageously dreadful things these 2 teachers said and did! My name was Shelagh Suthard.
Several mentions of Mr Spain and I certainly remember some of the punishments he handed out which would certainly not be acceptable today. Just come across a photo of him on this site at West Hove Junior school at the following link https://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/places/placescho/hove_junior_school-2/west_hove_portland_road_school#comment-49518.
That was indeed Mr Spain’s Riley, I remember it well and it was Dark Maroon….
As I recall, he was a dab hand with the slipper (plimsole)!!
Slipper, chalk, blackboard rubber, tennis ball – all appropriate instruments to throw at 8 year olds, as well as having kids doing several sets of 100 lines for being alive. The guy made that year at school a misery for me.
