Mr. Crowley’s class of 1956
As an ex pupil of Fitzherbert school in Woodingdean I am never surprised to see more bits and pieces of our history coming to light, and also coming together. I have been sent a photo of class 3a with Mr. Crowley our teacher in 1956. The photo was sent to me by Vera Wakefield (nee Bridger) who started school at the same time that I did at St. John the Baptist in 1948. We were in the same class until we left school I think in 1958. Vera gave me some of the names of our classmates and I have tried to fill in the rest.
Putting names to faces
I studied the photo for some days and some of the names gradually came back to me. Some I have not remembered no matter how hard I racked my brain. I am sincerely hoping that some of us are still alive and kicking and will see the photo and leave a comment. Thank you again Vera for the photo. The names that I recall are as follows:

Third row, third from right, the unknown name is Veronica Hitchings.
There was also a Christopher Hitchings a year above these, probably left July 1956. Also several Dalys if I remember correctly, possibly Mary? and at least two Gobles. Never thought I’d see Crowley again! And two more Chapmans who lived in the orphanage next door. Freddie was one, and I bought a 1932 Panther 250cc sloper from his elder brother whose name I can’t remember now.
Thanks for that Janet, another class mate from so long ago when we were so young looking and could run everywhere, fond memories.
Just looked at this photo again, and would love to catch up with one particular person who was by very best friend at that time. It was Carol Fisher, I have a special reason because my daughter is going to marry her cousin’s son. Deanna Sadgrove also attended our school. Unfortunately Deanna has died and we have no way of finding Carol.
I think that’s me second row third from left, Rosalind Sullivan. I know I was in that class.
No! I’ve realised that can’t be me in the photo because Brian Hodges is in it and I know he was in the year below me so I must have been in class 4a and left summer of 1957.
