The crowning of the Queen of the May

These lovely young ladies are walking to the crowning of the May Queen at St Joseph’s Church.

This would have been taken sometime in the early fifties. From the left are: Christine Archbold, ?. Brenda(?), Josephine Pirolli, Kathleen Read, Margaret Ellis, Carole Dickinson and Josephine Walsh.

Can you add names to some of the other faces? If you can help, please leave a comment below.

  • Well, this is a real memory jerker. I do recognise Carol Dickinson, Josephine Walsh and Kathleen Read. Although I also remember the other names mentioned I can’t claim to recognise them or to be able to add any further names. However, surely the teacher in the background must be Mrs Trunfell. Can anyone confirm this please?

  • Sorry, Tom, I can’t confirm whether the teacher is Mrs Trunfell or not. My memory’s let me down on this one. Anyone else know?

  • Kathy, I would be very interested if you do have any other details of Josephine Pirolli – or others of the family. I am tracing my family tree and Josephine would be my second cousin. Her father was, I think, my great uncle – Peter Pirolli – she had sisters called Francis and Clementina (Nina). Love to hear from you, if you could help.

  • Hi Lis, I’m sorry but I can’t tell you anything about Josephine. I haven’t seen her since the day we left St Joseph’s. Good luck with your tree research. Regards Kathy

  • Hello. I am Clementina’s son. All the sisters are alive and well. If you require any information just send me an email.

  • Josephine Pirolli is my aunt and alive and well living in Worthing, Francis my other aunt living in Bevendean, and Nina my Mum sadly has full blown alzheimers and living in care in Brighton.

  • I was in this May precession. Cant remember all the names but Kathy Reed and I were good friends. It was great to see this picture.
