  • Where would I find the other document that goes with the map? I would like to see who resides within the dwellings that the numbers correspond with. My great-grandmother and her family immigrated from Gardner Street to Utah with the Mormon Church in 1856. Her father was a Green Grocer on Gardner Street. I would like to know more about the area and history of that time period. This map is very interesting as is this whole site. I am glad that I stumbled across it. Her Grandfather was also a Green Grocer on another street and I am interested in what that means exactly.

  • The Cresey report on Brighton’s sanitation is held at The Keep archive of Brighton documents at Falmer; there also you will find the various street directories that give the occupier and trades for various addresses. Do bear in mind that street numbering may have changed since then. Greengrocers were dealers in fruit and vegetables. Look on the website of the North Laine Conservation Area, under Gardner Street and you will find out more, also this ‘My Brighton & Hove’ site has a deal about that area.
