  • My sister Janice cox is sitting on the floor centre, holding the shield. 2nd row, 1st on left, Janine? I Remember with much happiness my days at the school. I was 1 year ahead of my sister. I was taught by Mr. Foster, Miss Weatherly, Miss Chapman and Mr Hinton. I was also in the choir during my time at the school and remember playing Dick Whittington in Mr Fosters class play. • Further to my comments on 23/10/2012 I have looked at the photograph again and realise that the girl in 2nd row, 1st on the left is in fact Susan Sharpe, not Janine. I also identify,1st row from top, left, 3rd Susan Pocock, 8th Susan Reeves, 9th Demelza. 2nd row, 3rd Tony Medhurst, 6th Julianne Grigg, 7th Susan Wade, 11th Janine Sharpe, (unrelated to S. Sharpe). 3rd row, 6th David Donna. 4th row, 1st Miss Chapman, 2nd Anne Webb, 5th Maria Graham, 9th Mary Frazer, 10th surname, Shepherd. 5th row, 9th Julia Blackman. I am not sure but wonder whether this photo could possibly be Summer 1966 and not ’67 as I started secondary school in September 1966 and although I cannot name the pupils I think a few of the older students were in my final school year at the Downs. Sorry if I have mis-spelt any names.

And Wendy – I remember you as Wendy Cox. I was in the same class as your sister, and we lived just round the corner from you in Shaftesbury Road. Happy happy days at Downs, and one of the best starts in life we could have had.

  • I am right next to Miss Chapman, Jill Saxby is sitting next to me, 3rd row from bottom. The more I look at this photo the more names I remember. Wendy and Janice Cox, I always thought you both were SO beautiful, ballet dancers I believe! Wow! Fantastic memories here. x

  • Oh happy days! Love to everyone. First and last time I had my hair cut short.

  • Mr Morgan, he was one heck of a head teacher! Knowing I was becoming a prolific reader, he used to lend me books from the ‘private’ collection in his office and never failed to discuss them with me afterwards. Looking back, I owe this school a lot.

  • I’m struggling to place names and faces together, other than Jill Saxby who lived in Hollingdean Terrace, the road behind Roedale Road where I lived. (You were spot on with my service in the Royal Marines Band, Jill).
I have very happy memories of those days and around 1974, when I was told Mr Morgan was retiring, I went back to the school to wish him well. A wonderful school and I hope everyone is keeping well.

  • I was trying to find Maria Graham as she was my best friend. I believe she went to live abroad. Julia Blackman and I always got the giggles.
This school picture shows me bottom centre. I believe that Linda Monohan is top far left. Philip Spencer is second row down third from right.
    Lovely school and happy days.

  • Does anyone remember performing in the end of year Play called “The Cow That Wouldn’t Budge?” Written and arranged by Mr Foster of course.
I was the doctor’s wife. Tony Irving was the Doctor. Can still sing my solo part. Am I sad or what?

  • I do remember “The cow that wouldn’t budge” and, from time to time, my mum would reflect fondly on that play, even when I was into my 60’s. I also recall an 8mm film being made about another story, although I can’t remember the name of the film.
