This photograph of the ‘Great Wheel’ on the Palace Pier was taken in 1938. It certainly is a world away from the recently erected Brighton Wheel – and I have to admit – I like it a lot better.
Does anyone know how long this wheel was on Palace Pier? Maybe the more senior citizens amongst you even remember riding on it.

I don’t recall it, except from old pictures and cards, but for sure it’s better than the new one to look at. Mind you, that probably means it’s a death trap for the riders!
I believe the ferris wheel shown had a very fleeting existence on the Palace Pier. It was installed at the start of 1938 and was reported to have had 3,000 visitors on one day during the Whitsun holiday that year. Unfortunately, with the advent of WW2 and prohibited use of the pier, the wheel was probably dismantled. I am unaware whether it was reinstated after the war was over.
