The Green Gym

Conservation of the environment

Portslade Green Gym covers the whole of Brighton and Hove and National Trust land surrounding to the west and north of the city. The group was originally set up about fourteen years ago and managed by the then BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers), but now referred to as The Conservation Volunteers. We have managed and run ourselves for quite a few years, without the input from The Conservation Volunteers, but they still sponsor us. You can find out about the work of The Conservation Volunteers at their website.

A therapeutic process

The Green Gym is a scheme which inspires you to improve both your health and the environment at the same time. Experienced leaders guide you through a range of practical projects, giving you the opportunity to tackle physical jobs in the outdoors – improving your strength and stamina, boosting your practical skills and confidence and benefiting your local green spaces. Volunteers learn as they work and encouraged to be aware of local wildlife like nesting birds/butterflies/bees and dormice. We work very vigorously and enjoy chatting and banter. The whole process is very therapeutic and you get to meet people and make new friends.
