An ancient community
Many of the pages here in this section on St Nicholas’ Church, have been about the fabric of the building and the history of the restorations and renovations it has had over the years. While that is very important to chronicle, we need to remember that the church is much more than just an historic building; it houses a community that has an ancient connection with previous worshippers over a period of more than 900 years.
The forty third vicar
Father Robert Chavner is Vicar of St Nicholas’ and is the forty-third instituted Vicar of the church since 1091. The church in Father Robert’s day is very different to that of his ancient predecessors. St Nicholas’ is not only used for worship; the community is welcomed in for many different activities. Lunchtime concerts are held regularly and the church is a venue for the Brighton Festival. Wedding receptions and social events are held in the church and St Nicholas’ Christmas Fayre is always a great success. They also have a very popular babies and toddlers group aptly named ‘St Nicholas’ Nippers’.
