The Temple Inn
Victoria Road/Montpelier Street
The Temple Inn was situated on the corner of Victoria Road and Montpelier Street, opposite St Michael and All Angels church. The building is still very much the same, although it is now housing. The main difference is the corner entrance is now walled up and, of course, the painted wall advertisements have been obliterated.
The licencee’s name, M G Tilbury, was prominently displayed above what was probably the saloon bar entrance, with that to the public bar being on the corner.

Jennifer, do you mean that the corner entrance is walled up behind what appears to be a more recent door, with the red steps leading up to it?? Did this Temple Inn take its name from the nearby “Temple” in Montpelier Road which was built, I think, for the occupancy of Thomas Read Kemp?

In the 1891 census my ancestor Denis Rice Wade was recorded as the licensee. He lived on site with his wife Kate Emma Wade nee Scott and their three children. The census lists the address as 2 Victoria Road with the addendum of “Temple inn”. Kate Emma Wade nee Scott was my Great Great Grandfather’s daughter. Kate was born in Wandsworth, London.
