157 Church Road Hove

This is a view of the offices of the Hove Echo, in Church Road at the west corner of George Street. The photograph was taken in the period between 1890 and 1900.

In 1902 the offices were moved to Stone Street, Brighton; the paper survived the move to Brighton by only a year or two.

  • I worked at Elmutt Clifton Printers as a compositor in the 1960s, but not at this location. It was located at the corner of Old Shoreham Road and Sackville Road. There were, as I recall, two brothers who ran the shop. One was incredibly fussy and he wouldn’t rest until the job was perfect to his eye. The other one was far more easy-going. Their father was a holy terror, and would often suddenly appear in the shop in his Wellington boots, probably having come from his allotment or something. He had a very loud voice and would bellow instructions for a while and then disappear again. There was a lovely young lady who worked in the office who I was madly in love with, but I would nearly faint with shyness every time she came near me. I think she knew I fancied her, and she enjoyed making me blush! Some of the other people who I worked with used to commute by train every day from Steyning, I think. I live in Canada now, and the last time I was in Hove, the shop wasn’t there any more. Anyone remember me from that era?

  • I worked there from 1983 until 1990 as a minder. I jumped ship just before it went down in 1991.
Fine printers since 1890, and lasted 101 years.
