The sundial

I took this picture of a sundial over a side entrance to St Augustine’s Church, Stanford Avenue; it is on the Florence Road side of the church. In the thirty years I have lived in Brighton I have never noticed the sundial until now.

The quotation is from the Bible: I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work (John 9:4). I hope the sundial can be preserved, along with the building.

  • I woke up a little depressed this morning. Then, there was your posting, Hilary, with this beautiful message about day and night. What a gift.

  • I was Christened at this church in 1950 and joined the Cubs and Scouts in the hut next to that doorway and my doctors is still opposite but never noticed the sundial! Needless to say the tour-guide in me shouted “Always look up!” and of course I haven’t – chagrin all round!
