From bakers to solicitors
By Nigel McMillan, architect

"This is a lovely, simple building in the centre of Brighton. It's now a firm of solicitors but it started off as the home for a Mr. Millar who owned a bakery in the centre of Brighton. I think this is a good example of buildings from that period - it's simple, elegant and comfortable."

Nigel - I had no idea you had commented on No 15. I have been trying to find some history on it. How did you know it was built by the Millars? Have you any other information please?

This was the home of Isaac Bass, a very wealthy grocer in Brighton. He was a Quaker and was mayor of Brighton in 1856. In 1857 he was made an alderman.
