The substructure of the Palace Pier in course of erection c1893
From the 'My Brighton' exhibit
I worked on the ironwork in 1937 for six months, knocking off rust and barnacles. It was freezing work, brushing the snow away first - a two pairs of trousers job. Getting down on the ropeladder was great fun and working from scaffold boards. There was no health and safety those days!
