The best British countryside

The thing I love most about Brighton is its geographical location. You have the Downs to the north, and the sea to the south, and Brighton is nestled between the hills. It’s like having the best the British countryside can offer within a fingertip distance.

Selfish decadence
What I don’t like about Brighton is the selfish decadence. I’m aware Brighton has a long relationship with hedonism – the bequest of our once resident Royal, but that doesn’t justify the fact that Brighton caters to those that have.

I have become more aware of this since working with a voluntary agency in the city – the cycles of disadvantage, the poverty traps, all seen as being of less importance than making Brighton ‘The Place To Be’, or European City of Culture, or spending millions on the sea front.

Our poorer housing estates
It’s a bit sad that the most beautiful aspect of this city – its location – has been used negatively. It is surely not a coincidence that our poorer housing estates are built in the folds of the Downs. Whitehawk, in particular, has national, if not international reputations, and it is hidden from all who might be offended. Brighton – the place to pretend it’s not happening!
