A magnificent edifice
“The Grand Hotel is a magnificent edifice, right in the centre of town. It’s part of our tourist trade. The magnificence has been increased in a sad way because in 1984 it was devastated by a terrorist bomb. Since then an army of workmen moved in and completely refurbished the inside and outside of it and it’s even more magnificent now than in its early days.”

For many years around the time of the bombing in 1984, my father was the pianist at The Grand at Brighton and occasionally The Grand at Eastbourne. Fortunately he was not at the Grand on that fateful night. I believe that he was very popular and had quite some following amongst the regular guests, especially ‘out-of season’.

Ah, so it’s your dad who we’ve probably seen and listened to at the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne. (And to me that’s an even more magnificient building.) Very enjoyable listening. Sometimes nowadays a harpist plays instead – but it doesn’t beat the good old piano!
