These are Chapman's Elephants arriving at the Hippodrome from Brighton Station in December 1935. Chapman was a London animal dealer who toured circuses under canvas and on the stage particularly featuring groups of wild animals. He died suddenly in 1935 whereupon one of his circuses was taken over by George Black, boss of General Theatres Corporation, and reproduced as a circus-revue called 'Here Comes the Circus' which successfully toured the G.T.C. No.1 theatres in 1935-6, again in 1936-7 (as 'Circus Time') and in 1937-8 (as 'Hip Hip Zoo Ray'). The elephants were named Margaret Nellie and Jennie (a.k.a. Baby).
