'A white elephant?'

Brighton marina

“Some people consider it a white elephant – I disagree. It’s a boat park. The town now benefits from a changing coastline. The buildings within the Marina are not of particular interest but the environment within is. The Marina is only half finished so its critics should wait and see how it develops.”

  • It is wonderful to read the history of this part of ‘new’ Brighton. I often walked from Lower Bevendean, up Jacob’s ladder, over the racecourse and down newly built Wilson Avenue to the crossroads at the gasometers and down Rifle Butt Road to Black Rock where I played for hours in all weathers. Usually, I stopped at the bakery to by something to eat on my journey.

I left Brighton to go to UEA in 1974 and when I returned I was so sad to see the area gone. It is now just an intersection when it previously had such character. I expect these days it would be preserved as a conservation area.

Thanks for putting this up as it not only stirred good memories but I also learned things I did not know; such as the boundary up to 1928 (I wondered why it was called Boundary Road) and the local entry tariff for coal.
