A dingy alleyway

Although Brighton is a place of bright sunshine and open skies and colour, some of the nicest parts from my point of view are the dingy side streets. There is nowhere quite as dingy as Orange Row. It's full of black bin liners and stray cats and general rubbish. It's a dark alleyway, the last little bit of the Pimlico slum that was demolished in the 1870s.

I understand that Orange Row is being partially developed by a small local builder. In your opinion are they still keeping the dingy side street feel or have they managed to do a reasonable job making this street look just a little better?

We are one of the companies that moved into Orange Row following the redevelopment of the street in 2006. The previously dingy garages/storerooms have been turned into two storey units with a nice, contemporary feel and lots of light. Most of the companies in Orange Row are small, young, creative Brighton businesses who want to be based in the heart of the North Laine. There's a friendly community feel in the street although the Biffa bins from the shops on Gardner Street still give Orange Row a slightly down-at-heel edginess.
