48 in 11 countries
At least 48 settlements in 11 different countries are known as ‘Brighton’, together with numerous variations such as ‘New Brighton’, ‘Brighton Beach’, ‘Brighton Hills’, ‘Brightons’, etc.
In the United Kingdom, the hamlet of Brighton lies south-east of Newquay in Cornwall, while a Brighton farm stands one mile south of Hartington in Derbyshire, and another lies to the south-west of Cupar in Fife.
The largest Brighton other than our own is situated six miles south of Melbourne, Australia, on the eastern side of Port Philip Bay, and has a population of about 40,000.

iii) Canada (4): in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Ontario provinces;

ix) Trinidad (1): forty miles south-south-west of Port of Spain;
x) United States of America (27): in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York (2), Ohio (2), Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

In addition to the two Brightons mentioned as being in New Zealand, there is another one, at the beach at Christchurch in the South Island. In fact, there’s Brighton, South Brighton and North Brighton!
Brighton Hills West – a housing tract built in the early 1960s by an ex-husband of Christina Onassis – (Richard?) Bolker Development in the Los Angeles Ca. suburb of Montebello. S. or Rt. 60 N. of Beverly Bl. E. of Atlantic. Bl. and W. of Montebello Bl. Built as typical tract housing of the early 1960s three and four bedroom one-storey and later two-storey homes in the modern/contemporary style, some with south facing views to the Palos Verders Peninsula on a clear day.
There is a Brighton-Le-Sands in Sydney, Australia. It is located on the shores of Botany Bay.
I am a Brighton expatriate, originally from Nile Street in The Lanes and a former pupil at Middle Street Primary School, the Secondary Technical and Varndean Sixth Form. I now live and work in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (population 110,000) in the Caribbean and just two miles away, on the eastern or ‘windward’ coast, is a small village called Brighton.
I was raised in Brighton and emigrated to Canada in 1976. I presently live in Kelowna, British Columbia, a city of 100,000 people. We have Brighton, Saltdean and Seaford Roads. The houses on those streets were built by Blackie Blackford, who hailed from somewhere close to Lewes. Thus, the names of those streets.
I was born and raised in Brighton, UK and emigrated to Canada in 1990. I live in a town called Napanee in Ontario. The town of Brighton, Ontario is about a 45 minute drive from Napanee, it is a quaint little town, I have stopped off there once. Sadly some of its older historic buildings are being demolished.
Just out of interest I named my Dalmatian dog Brighton.
I was born in Groby Leics. in Sept.1940 and raised in Brighton from Oct. 1940, then moved to London in 1963.
I emigrated to South Australia in 1985. Just south of where we live in Salisbury, there is a Brighton and Hove located next to each other on the seafront, always reminds me of home.
Probably the closest Brighton to Brighton Sussex is the small hamlet of Brighton, NE of Cayeux sur mer on the French coast near the mouth of the River Somme.
We used to drive out to the open air eating stalls at Brighton Beach, just to the south of Miri in Sarawak, East Malaysia (Borneo), when my wife, two daughters and I lived there in the early 1980s.
I recall seeing a Brighton and Hove in Singapore, about 35 years ago.Before WWII Singapore was home to many British people. Driving around I was amazed at just how British it all looked, and that was in the early 70’s. Lovely clean place and very interesting.
I am a Brightonian. I was born and grew up here. I lived & worked for a while in Monte Estoril in Portugal. I found myself living very near to the Rua do Brighton.
An addition to the list of Brightons in Australia: there is a suburb to the north of Perth called Brighton.
There is a suburb of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, called Brighton. I don’t know if it’s one of the four in Canada already mentioned.
Brighton Beach is a distant suburb of New York out on the south shore of Long Island, adjacent to the more famous area of Coney Island (which was the only bit of New York that I felt fear in !). BB is fantastic, it is the largest Russian settlement outside of mainland Russia, the main street was full of shops with Cyrillic writing, Russian papers, grocers packed with beetroots and cucumbers and fish shops with enormous carp. The whole street was full of people who had come from central casting-“Find me some Russians!”. If they weren’t Russians they were Orthodox Jews. The beachfront-sadly not pebbles- was pure pale sand, people were playing chess on the board walk with huge pieces on vast chess boards and even the apartment blocks looked less New York suburban, more Moscow suburban. If you go I think it was the ‘J’ car subway from Manhattan. BB is like taking the London Tube out to Chipping Ongar!…probably further!
Hi Geoff, Just a small pointer – the central line terminates at Epping and London Underground has not run to Ongar for many years. A steam preservation society now runs the section between Epping, North Weald and Ongar as a heritage railway. Regards, Andy
The Chairman of the Epping & Ongar Railway Volunteer Society is Malcolm Hills, with whom I started school at St Peter’s School, Portslade and who lived in St Leonard’s Avenue, Hove until about 1957 or ’58 when his parents moved to Welwyn Garden City. My mum lived in Hove – Brighton, South Australia. Her name was Lesley Brown.
Being from Brighton. I was interested to see Brighton the map of the Oregon Coast in the USA. After driving through it on the coast highway for the past few years finally realised that its less than a fly speck on the map. Maybe a few houses and a rocky beach but no pebbles. Still, the name brings back many memories.
There is a New Brighton and New London in Minnesota and The New London to New Brighton Antique Car Run has been held every August since 1987.
