Pavilion Field

I came to Brighton in 1997 to be a student at Sussex University and loved my time in the city. Before coming to Brighton, I had lived in America, where I picked up an interest in baseball. I thought this was an interest I would have to abandon, but was happy to discover that Brighton is one of the best places in Britain to pursue what is — in Britain, at least — a rather esoteric sporting interest.

Throughout my time at Sussex Uni, I played for the local club, the Brighton Buccaneers. I now live in London, but still come down to Brighton every week to go to one of my favourite places in the town, which very few people, even the taxi drivers, know about: the Buccaneers’ baseball diamond, called Pavilion Field.

Pavilion Field is located next to Brighton Rugby Club and the Waterhall Golf Club just beyond the bypass. It is the best baseball facility in Britain — trust me, I’ve played on most of them — and given its location, the most beautiful.

Because no other baseball pitch in Britain is as well-maintained, the British national team training there this year, and the National League’s finals have been held there for each of the past five years. Brighton have also won the national championship in three of those years.

More information about the Pavilion Field, including some overhead photographs taken from a helicopter, can be found on http://www.brightonbuccaneers.com/photo_gallery/aerial/
