Ugh! This was an unpretentious "spit and sawdust" local boozer (but with a reputation for "lively " evenings that often involved a visit from the boys in blue from John Steet) now turned into a sort of cafe with a twee name. Better as it was, in my view.

It's sadly just another example of the silly pub name craze, which seems to have swept through Brighton and Hove. Just calling a pub the Banana and Porridge is neither witty or clever.

In the mid to late 1960s we used to pop into the Standard for a pint or two of proper scrumpy to "get us going" prior to a night out. In those days a pint of scrumpy there was about 1s 3d (just over 6p) and pint of light & bitter was around 2s 0d (10p); a big difference to an apprentice.
