War memorial

A really magnificent war memorial

On the boundary of Brighton & Hove is the very elegant Regency Square. At the lower end is a really magnificent war memorial to the soldiers of the Royal Sussex Regiment who died in the Boer war not only from Boer bullets but also from disease. It's a figure in total solid bronze on a wonderful plinth of a soldier encouraging his men to go forward into the teeth of battle.

The boundary of Brighton and Hove is a little further west and is marked out by the Peace Statue. The finished monument was designed by Newbury Trent and installed in October 1912. Although called a 'Peace' memorial because the monument takes the form of an angel of peace holding an orb and olive branch, the statue in fact celebrates the reign of Edward VII.
