East Street

Then and now photos

19th century view
This old hotel was established in the 18th century.
Like several other inns, it was demolished to make way for Brill's Baths, which in turn were replaced by the Savoy cinema.

20th century view
The Savoy cinema opened in 1930 and could seat 2,300 people. It was renamed the ABC cinema in 1963, and was divided into four smaller auditoria.  The buildings across the street leading down into Pool Valley have changed very little over the last century, except for the demolition of the chimneys.

21st century view
This photo shows the Picture House pub in East Street. You can see the back of this pub elsewhere on the tour (select Pool Valley).
