I think it’s a scandal how the Victoria Gardens have been turned into little more than a Council Rec. I can remember the lawns, cut in stripes, and the flowerbeds full of colour. Now we have the scar of a muddy footpath, a swamp in the wet & dustbowl in the dry. How many more events will they hold there? Sometimes it looks like a travellers’ site. Really shameful.

Well Ken, good to see good old racism is alive and well! I live on a beautiful travellers’ site, and in no way does it look muddy or dirty, because, contrary to what you all read in the papers, travellers are very clean and take pride in where they live.

Julie, what planet are you on? Next time the travellers go to Waterhall playing fields, or any of the other parks in Brighton, go and see the rubbish and building rubble left behind after they have gone. That’s why it costs hundreds of thousands of pounds to clear the site.

I know lots of travellers where I live and the majority of them are clean and as Julie has said they do take pride in their appearance and their homes. Of course like any other group of people, there are always a few that give the rest a bad name.

I am a member of the Friends of Hollingbury Woods, an area which has had frequent occupations of ‘travellers’. The Local Nature Reserve which we maintain on a wholly voluntary basis was strewn with dirty nappies, human excrement, used food containers, general household rubbish and unwanted scrap metal signs thrown into the woodland adjacent. A member of the group took a photo to send on to the apathetic council and was threatened with violence and a torrent of foul swearing. This site does not support political views so I will leave it there, but those of us living on the urban fringe really do have a lot to put up with as regards these trespassers.

I am aware that views regarding travellers can generate very strong feelings. But this site is not a platform for the airing of political views.
