Choir Boys, early 1900s

This photograph shows the Blaker brothers as choir boys at St Peter’s Church in the early 1900s.

From left to right: Herbert was my grandfather (1893-1966), Charles went to live in New Zealand (1892-?) and Clement died during the First World War in France (1895-1917). All of them went to Varndean Boys School.

  • Having always thought it was the St Peter’s Church in Brighton, I now believe these boys were choir boys at St Peter’s Church, Preston Park, Brighton as that is where their parents are buried. I never realised Preston Park Church was called St Peter’s.

  • I was Head Chorister in the late 70s. My dad was sub organist/choir master and Eric Spencer was Director of music.
