In 1998,in September I came over [to Brighton].  I moved from Canada, basically sold everything I had over there and dragged my five suitcases over to Germany where my parents lived. And then went to look for a flat in Brighton; I gave myself one week. It was very scary, I remember, just coming down here and being shocked at the state of the houses really. It was so different from what I was used to, comparing like the prices and what you got for your money was quite shocking at first.

Wild Brighton backpackers
I was staying,in a backpackers for a week. I needed cheap accommodation basically. I thought “Oh well. I’ll give myself the luxury of taking a four bed room instead of a dormitory.” That was not a very nice experience. I remember the two girls that were living in that room with me had obviously been living there for months and months and saw me as the intruder.  So every night there would be techno music on full blast up until about 2 o’clock in the morning – so my first experience of Brighton was a bit wild. I just thought “Wow.” So I was pretty glad to get out of the backpackers.
