• My great grandfather was a shopkeeper (grocers) at number 23 in the early 1900’s.

• Two of my relatives lived on Carlton Street in the late Victorian period. William and Ann Harris lived at number 30. In the 1881 census he, a self declared painter ‘out of employ’ (age 62) and she a laundress (age 57).

  At No. 31, lived relatives from another branch of my family. Henry Page, a coachman, age 44 and his wife Esther, a laundress, age 39.

  The families must have known each other well and a relative of Henry in another branch of the page family married William and Ann’s niece Amelia, who was 27 at the time of the census.

• My great-grandmother grew up at 12 Carlton Street in the 1860s and 1870s. Her father William Pullen was initially a grocer’s porter. By 1871 the family was living at 101 Carlton Street when William’s occupation was then a grocer. In the early 1880s he took over the newsagent business next door to a grocer’s at 100 Carlton Hill.

• Hi Vivien, If your relatives lived at 12 Carlton Street in the 1860s – 1870s then that was Carlton Hill. Carlton Street was renamed to Carlton Hill in 1871 (after the Census). In the 1860s-1870s’ what we know as the ‘modern’ Carlton Street was then called Guildford Terrace.
  It played havoc with my Ancestry trying to prove this but I confirmed it. My actual ancester (Burgess family) lived at 77 Carlton Street which is now actually 77 Carlton Hill and lived from the 1850s to 1880s through the changes of road names.
