St John's Carlton Hill was the 'twin church' for Brighton College Chapel. After the Harvest Festival service each year, boys used to be sent out to houses in the parish with boxes of food for pensioners.

My cousin, Albert Newington, was a choirboy at this church, what a lot of leg pulling he got for it. But he did have a nice voice. We both went to St Johns School down the road, at least we did in between bunking off for the day. After that we went up to Queens Park School where we did the same until we got caught by Mr Metcalfe one of the teachers, the devil himself. Ahh ... what memories.

I was married in this church on December 3rd 1960, to David Henry Blackman, I was eighteen years old,so this year we will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary.

I was in the choir in the late 50's, not because I had a good voice but because I was altar boy. I was christened at St John's in 1951. I also attended St John's Infants & Junior. Once a week the whole school would have assembly in the church, that was when I would carry out my altar boy duties. When my mum passed away in 1972 the service was held at St John's, consequently this church holds a great deal of memories.
