My GGG Grandad Thomas Moore and family lived at 2 Circus Street in 1851 – Is this house in this picture? They later lived at 125 Sussex Street in 1861.

I’m researching the Cane family who lived at No. 1 Circus Street from at least 1861 to after 1891 [from censuses]. One of the Cane sons, Richard, was with the family next door at No. 2 in the 1901 census. Could the photo above be house No. 1?

My Great, Grandfather and his father and father’s father before him lived in Circus Street, they were the Wadey Chimney Sweeps. I have records of Wadey’s living in Circus Street from 1828 until 1932 when my great-grandfather died after being hit by a car and a tram in York Place.

The house on the corner is the old ‘Yacht & Anchor’ public house. It was demolished to make space for the Circus Street municipal market that opened in January 1937. The pub was located at 23 Sussex Street, the address was found in the book ‘Backstreets of Brighton’. On the map of Circus Street/Carlton Hill area (on page 40) it looks like No.1 would have been located much further down Circus Street.
