Jews Synagogue AM 5598

While recently walking up Devonshire Place I came across this sign on top of a recently refurbished building. The sign reads; JEWS SYNAGOGUE AM 5598.

We are currently in the year of 5767 of the Hebrew Calender so that makes the synagogue 169 years old and dates it back to 1837.

I know the building was a health club for many years but wondered if anyone knew anything about its history and when it was used as synagogue.

The synagogue at 37-39 Devonshire Place, designed by Benjamin Bennett, moved here from its first site in Jew Street in 1824. It was redesigned and enlarged by David Mocatta, who also designed Brighton station, in 1837 and was further modified in 1867. The synagogue closed in 1874. It then had various commercial uses, most recently as a health club that closed in July 2004. The building is Grade II listed.

I lived at No 16 Devonshire Place between 1966 and 1980. As a boy I remember the building was owned by a pharmacy company, I think they were called Barclays. During each day many delivery vans would come and go. I often spoke to the workers and remember it was painted a light blue colour.

Can anyone give me any information on when Brighton Sheet Metal Works first started up at 43 Devonshire Place. They left in 1955 to move to their present site at Lower Bevendean, Brighton.
