This was intended as a Chapel of Ease for St. Nicholas. It opened for worship in 1795 but was only used during the summer months. In 1803 the building was consecrated. Only the wealthy or prominent folk would be allowed to be married there or have their children baptised there.

Comments:

How things must have changed! My parents were married in the Chapel Royal on Boxing Day 1936; they were neither prominent nor wealthy. They both worked for the Co-op in London Road. In fact - they could not even afford a photographer!
