By Jennifer Drury
A plaque to commemorate officers and men of the 209th and 263rd Field Coys who had fallen in battle, had previously been situated in St. Aubyn's Church, Combe Road. When the church was forced to close, St. George's agreed to take the plaque. Today, the Mayor of Brighton, Councillor Mrs Carol Theobald, accompanied by her husband, Councillor Geoffrey Theobald OBE. attended a service of rededication and blessing of the plaque and standard at St George's Church Kempton.
Father Andrew Manson-Brailsford,Vicar, and Father Brian Twohig Assistant Priest, led the service, while Jack Chitty (REA Branch Chairman) conducted the parade. The service was attended by officers and men of 1 Troop 579, F Squ E.O.D. (V) RE, and cadets from Sussex ACF, and family and friends. Brigadier W. Shackell, REA Branch President, read the first lesson.
