k) WHIPPING POST HOUSE: A sixteenth-century listed building which was once the home of Captain Dunk, a famous Rottingdean smuggler. It has extensive cellars and tunnels underneath, and was also the village butcher’s shop at one time. The chestnut tree on the small green marks the position of the former village whipping-post and stocks.

My wife is researching family history in which Captain Dunk, the smuggler of Rottingdean, features. She is trying to find out his first name but so far has drawn a ‘blank. Can anybody offer suggestions on how to find his name?
